Potential Return of the NHL Season?

Life has been very different for people since March. The streets have been alot emptier. Homes have been much more crowded, as family members are working and studying from home. Most importantly, however, all sports have been suspended. Empy arenas, empty locker rooms, empty gyms, and of course, empty sports lover's hearts. Ever since Rudy Gobert tested positive for the virus that one fateful night in March, the sports world has never been the same. However, there seems to be light at the end of the tunnel, at least for hockey fans. According to Greg Wyshynski's ESPN article "NHLPA board approves league's plan for 24-team playoffs upon coronavirus return", the NHL is considering a playoff to begin as early as this summer. The playoff would consist of 24 teams, with "the top four seeds in each conference, as determined by their standings points percentage when the regular season was paused on March 12, [receiving] byes through a round of best-of-five play-in series featuring seeds 5 through 12" (Wyshynski). The winner of the play-in series would go to the "traditional 16-team Stanley Cup playoff bracket, which would have seven-game series" (Wyshynski). While it would not be perfect, this playoff would give fans their hockey fix, and would also give most hockey fans a chance to see their team shine in playoff action. There's No Crying in Baseball, But There is Social Distancing...

As of now, it is safe to say that Summer 2020 will be very different than the ones we are used to. No public pools, no backyard barbecues, no graduation. Most importantly, no baseball. However, that may not be the case. The MLB is planning on a return that would feature a very busy schedule for the players. However, things would be very different for the nine guys taking the field, plus everyone else associated with the team. According to Ronald Blum's CBC Article "MLB outlines plan to return to play with social distancing measures: report", Major League Baseball officials produced a 67-page report on the way things would go during the 2020 season. Teams would be allowed a maximum of "50 players each" on the roster (Blum). Players would not be allowed to spit, so bye-bye sunflower seeds! Players are asked to keep their distance at all times, including the time spent in the dugout, the field and the locker room. All players, coaches and staff "must wear personal protective equipment while on buses and flights" and are not allowed to eat in restaurants while on the road (Blum). Most importantly, the balls will be "thrown away after it has touched multiple players" (Blum). Basically, any time a ball is hit, fielded and thrown in the same play, that ball must be thrown out. If you think the MLB went through enough balls already, just wait until you see this season! Now more than ever will players need quick hands! Are these measures a little too much?
